my home wired network is now working again after disconnecting the wireless router/access point which was causing a conflict after a year of working fine.

the question is whether i should configure the wireless router/access point (wrt54g) to act as an access point only or buy a pure wireless access point (wap54g) and sell the wrt54g??

Hmm... since you have alreadt the WRT54G you can try it as an Access Point before you make a final decision.:light:

WRT54G can work as an Access Point only if it is v1-4 and it is flashed with 3rd party firmware.

This would work too w/o buying more stuff.

Cable modem -> WRT54G -> 8port router used only as a switch (DHCP disabled).

i'm going to see what linksys says in terms of configuring the wrt54g as an access point...if it's a pita i might just buy the wap and sell the wrt and be done with it.

as for connecting the wireless router to the cable modem, it wouldn't work without doing a bunch of cabling under the house. the cable comes into the house at a far corner and the wireless for some reason just doesn't carry in our house....that's one of the reasons i went with a wired solution for the network. i wanted the wireless in the center of the house as a convenience if my wife or daughter wanted to use her lappy in the kitchen.

I knew there would be a caveat with your current infrastructure. Oh well, if you decide to get rid of that wrt54g and and it's a v1-4 consider me your first buyer. I need to upgrade my wifi to G.

yeah, i wanted to do wireless in the first place but it just doesn't work in my house for some reason. must be those terrific california building standards!!

i just got an email reply from linksys tech support on using the 54g as an access point. doesn't look too complicated. i'm going to try it tonight and if i have any issues i'll get the wap and sell the 54g. if it goes that way you will have first dibs and it will be a silly price given the help you have provided....but let me see how it goes with the conversion foyst...

thx
