Configure windows 7 to change system tray icon when using VPN?

I connect to a few VPN's using the standard VPN in windows 7 to do work for some of my clients. The problem is sometimes I forget to disconnect and start working on something else (that should not be on their VPN).

Is there a simple fix for this?

Like changing the network icon in the system tray to something else anytime I am connected to the VPN?

Or even something more drastic, like having the background of my taskbar color change anytime I am connected to any VPN?
