Configure Network Adapter for Gigabit Network / Jumbo Frames?

I have a NAS with GB connection (with jumbo frames to 9014) a GB switch capable of 9000 bytes jumbo frames and GB connection on my desktop with jumbo frames of 9000.

Right now the network adapter has a Speed and Duplex setting of auto-negotiate

Is it better to configure it to 1000 full duplex and enable the jumbo frames on the NAS to 9000?

If I fire up my desktop and it connects to the Switch, the port it is connected too is yellow vs. green which I believe indicates a GB connection.

I am just seeing if that is an optimal way of configuring for speed or if it really doesn't matter?

Thanks for any replies

If your nic supports jumbo frames you can turn it on under the local area connection properties/configure/advanced settings.

If your nic does not support jumbo frames then you can't take advantage of it.

The switch has to support it too.

At the end, on a peer-to-peer Network using client OS' it really makes very little (or no) difference.

And all devices on that segment need to support it also, you might wreck your internet access. There is supposed to be an "auto negotiate" method but many devices don't support it.

Yep...I got that part...I know where you make the setting change on the desktop / laptop...

Basic setup is this

Desktop GB Nic --> Cat5e --> to Netgear GS605 (which supports Jumbo Frames 9000) --> Cat5e --> QNAP TS-209 (which is GB port and supports Jumbo Frames 9000)

my uncertainty is on the desktop GB lan connection it lists the 'jumbo packets' option as 9014

no other options...

Does that matter? so if I set the desktop to 9014 and the NAS to 9000 will it conflict or is that the general setting?

Also the speed and duplex setting is set to auto-negotiate

Is it better / worse / no difference to actually pin it to 1000 Mbps full duplex?

Thanks for any info!

I was curious so I gave it a try. I could not detect a difference using linux server with samba and XP pro client.

These are independent settings. It's generally better to use auto-negotiation for gigabit.

Jumbo frames is more of a try-and-see -- if it works at all, there's a decent chance that it will give you a slight improvement.
