I misspoke. The htpc is only 100 mb. I have a 100 ft new cat 6 cable from amazon. I guess its too long. I'll get a 25 and a 50 and put a gigabit switch in between and see if that fixes the problem.

100m is the end to end limit for gigabit so 100ft is nothing.
 
Set the speed at 1Gbps manually and don't use auto negotiation, see if it fix problems.

Like sdifox said, 100ft is nothing since the standard is 100m.

And hope you are not mixing up line speed in Mbps and file transfer speed in KB or MB where upper case B means Bytes and 1 Byte = 8 bits.

oops, just saw that you mentioned your HTPC is 100M bps. Then set at 100M manually and see.

When NIC starts to malfunction, usually 1. can't get DHCP IP. 2. auto negotiation does not work properly.
