Config & MONITOR question

I am still undecided what to buy? I like the new Athlon with DDR, but it hasn't been in the market for long. My other choice is Pentium III.

Please give me advise on what are the "MUST HAVE" and "NICE TO HAVE" in my configuration especially for the video editing.
I am leaning towards Dell or Micron.

My 2nd question is about the Monitor:
I was told all trinitron is made by Sony.
Does that mean if I buy a Dell computer and I choose the Trinitron monitor it is a Sony Monitor?
What is the difference between the monitor sold by Sony and Dell's monitor?

I'd definately go with the Athlon and DDR because it is faster and cheaper. The high-end thunderbirds are so much cheaper than the Pentium 3's.

I'd say a 1ghz+ thunderbird
At the least 256 DDR ram. 384 or 512mb is much better for video editing though.
Graphics card I'm not really sure. Maybe a ATI All-in-wonder or something if you need the captures, tv-out, etc...

Yes it will be a monitor made by Sony. It probably doesn't say Sony on it but it is in fact made by them. The monitor sold by Dell might be comparable to a regular Sony monitor though I'm not really sure.

Nobody ever got fired for buying Dell.

For video editing I believe you'll need a lot of storage.

If you're ordering a Dell, I'd just get their monitor, although I think there are better ones available, Trinitron or otherwise. Give consideration to using dual monitors - they make life a lot easier, believe me.

Trinitron CRTs are made by Sony. Other manufacturers buy them and put them in their own monitors with their own electronics. Also, since the Trinitron patent expired, other mfg's make similar flat CRTs (with different names).

LOL Ulysses, I guess Dell is synonymous with Intel.

If you are buying a prebuilt computer, Dell doesn't sell AMD, but you probably knew that. Anyway, I'd go the Athlon route, because of it's expandibility, because the technology is new, it won't be phased out for a while. However, with the PIV here, along with rambus, the PIII will probably be dumped soon. And it looks like it'll be DDR and RDRAM in the future. Not sure where SDRAM is headed.

Why aren't you looking into Athlon with SDRAM? I just built a new machine around that. 512mb of PC133mhz power... not really doing video, but graphics and 3d modeling sucks it up like crazy.

And along with Ulysses recommendation, I say you should go with dual displays. You could just get another card and add it to the prebuilt you buy from Micron or Dell. Not sure if any of them offer the Matrox video cards, or cards with Twinview technology. Buying two Sony Trinitrons might cost you though. I'm running a Matrox G400 and two Hitachi CM771's. Got them cheap, $750 for both after rebate.
