Yes. I am. I admit it. I'm addicted to caffeine.
I used to drink a lot of coffee. Well, not a lot, but quite a bit.. Maybe 3 cups a day. I also drink a lot of caffeinated pop, ~36-48+oz a day.
If you haven't noticed already, caffeine in the form of coffee is.. expensive. I estimated I was spending at least 5$/week on coffee. And that's brewing my own, I'd hate to think of what I would be spending if I was buying it at an espresso shop, heh. I like my coffee strong/black, with a bit of cocoa and a splash of soy milk.
I was probably also spending at least 5$/week on caffeinated sodapop.
Then I discovered something else. Pills!
Why is it that everyones perception changes when it comes to pills?
So, instead of drinking coffee, I started taking the caffeine pills. They are 200mg each, or about a cup and a half of STRONG drip-coffee, or ~3 shots of espresso. I do admit they feel much more artificial than coffee, but I digress.
Suddenly, everyone starts noticing. "You're going to get addicted!", they cried. But wait... wasn't I already?
Ever since I started taking them, my consumption of caffeinated sodas has gone down too. I just don't crave them as much anymore, which I think is a good thing.
The caffeine pills are $2.06 for 40, 200mg pills.
That's 25 cents a gram. Premium coffee is what, 6 bucks a pound? If you use 1.5tbsp per cup, and get 150mg caffeine per cup(generous, IMO), that's only 3.3g of caffeine per pound.
I take 2, sometimes 3 if I want to stay up late, a day. So a 2$ bottle lasts me ~15-20 days, as opposed to the 10$ I would have spent on coffee. Not to mention I've been drinking less sodapop, which is even more expensive than coffee.
So, all-in-all, I see it as a good thing. It saves me from drinking empty calories, and saves me money. So, why is it that peoples' perceptions change so much when it comes to little pills? It suddenly turns into some hardcore drug or something, it's very amusing.
