ok so i have this modem. the chipset on it says Conexant SmartHCF. i think it's a software modem but i need so sort of written proof that it is indeed a software modem. anyone know?
ok.. it's software.. but how do you know it's software? is there something obvious that says it? maybe a link on conexant's site? my friend has one and wants to sell it to me and swears it's a hardware modem.. i know it's software.. but i want something to show him to prove it's a software modem.

Rockwell, now Conexant, doesn't make modems - they make chipsets and develop the firmware/drivers and sell them to various modem manufacturers. The "HCF" chipset is actually a single-chip PCI software-modem (controllerless, aka Win Modem).
Nice link pg. I recommend staying away from Conexant modems, like the article says. I used to have one and it caused so many headaches. Finding drivers for them is also a pain in the butt.
