Conexant SmartHCF modem. Is this a Hardware of Software modem? How can you tell?

ok so i have this modem. the chipset on it says Conexant SmartHCF. i think it's a software modem but i need so sort of written proof that it is indeed a software modem. anyone know?

On my office we have like 3 of them with those modem and yes its s/w modem.

Yes it's software, the HCF are some of the cheapest and shoddyist modems ever from my experience

ok.. it's software.. but how do you know it's software? is there something obvious that says it? maybe a link on conexant's site? my friend has one and wants to sell it to me and swears it's a hardware modem.. i know it's software.. but i want something to show him to prove it's a software modem.

Rockwell, now Conexant, doesn't make modems - they make chipsets and develop the firmware/drivers and sell them to various modem manufacturers. The "HCF" chipset is actually a single-chip PCI software-modem (controllerless, aka Win Modem).

Nice link pg. I recommend staying away from Conexant modems, like the article says. I used to have one and it caused so many headaches. Finding drivers for them is also a pain in the butt.
