concerns/ question with accelero S1 cooler

I've been running an XFX 9800gt for awhile now and it's been running great for me. I had changed the stock cooler to a Zerotherm GX810 as my temps were at 80-100C and the GX810 was $5 after rebate on the egg. My temps have been 46-60C after installation so I'd say that's a pretty good result. However being a computer hardware nut I'm getting sort of bored with it, not to mention I has never very enthused by the mounting system on the GX810.

I've been looking into the accelero s1 rev2 and got interested in it. The prospect of a silent passive cooler is intriguing or even something that can get my down to 35-48C with a quiet 120mm fan. The only thing I'm wondering is about the mounting, as I have heard that it can bend the card like in the picture below. I guess if one is careful you can avoid this, I just want to know if this is something I should be concerned about. I was also looking at the 100MM scythe Kaze fan as it is only 12mm wide and would take up less space.

I've seen the numbers the cooler gets and some reviews show it getting down the 35C and some are in the 40's so in your opinion would it be any better temperature wise than the cooler i have now? I am interested in getting a decent overclock out of this card. My room temp is generally a toasty 23-25C but I imagine it will be more like 21C as spring is around the corner.

thanks

I had the accelero S1 on my 8800 GT and it didn't bent the card. I've installed it on a 4850 and it bent it, but it works with no issues, so this is not a concern.
In your situation, getting an S1 is pretty useless, since you already have the GX810 with very good temps too. If you want to volt mod the GT, then maybe you should purchase the S1, otherwise, just let the card as it is and keep the money for something else.

I have this currently installed on my HD4850. No problems whatsoever and doesn't bend it at all.... But anyways, its a win-win situation. It's cooler and its quieter. However, if you're planning to run it just with the heatsink and no fan it didn't go well with mine. I would go up to about 80C running Furmark. Even though it didn't crash it was a little too hot for my tastes.

The 4850 I installed it on, was so bent that I thought it's not going to fit in the PCI-Express slot . Maybe yours have a different PCB or something.

Have an accelero s1 on a 8800 gt on 2nd pc, install was easy and no bending. However, temps are currently idling @44c, from what I can remember a range of 40's to 60's is pretty typical and that's with the turbo fan module addon (the mounting on the fan module is actually a bit of a hassle, I shoulda got a 120mm fan and zip ties). I don't think you will get any better temperatures with an accelero than with the cooler you already have, especially passive. If you still want to go ahead with a cooling upgrade, I'd recommend looking elsewhere where you might get more performance (case circulation? northbridge? ReTIMing?).

On my 8800GT, it will idle at 39C and load at 50C with no fan, in an Antec 900 case with the fans on medium and high, and also two 120's on my True pointed up on high. I really like this cooler.

Did you utilize the plastic spacers around the GPU socket area? Those are there to prevent the possibility of bending the card. I've got the S1 installed on a 4850 and a 4870. Both are not bent and exhibit excellent thermals.

Nope. Those things are so hard to install that I was afraid that I will crush the gpu . Bent or not the card works flawless.

Well, that's why your card is bent. The new kits have a small amount of adhesive to hold the plastic spacers in place, so they are now much easier to get installed.
