Concept of Dual Core

Ok. I just received the following PC:

Dell Dimension E521 Mini Tower desktop
AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core 3800+
Windows Vista Home installed Original
2048M DDR2 RAM
160G SATA hard drive
16X DVD+-RW double layer CD/DVD burner drive,
Dell USB mouse
1 Year At Home warranty

Now, I want to install XP on it. My only concern is the dual core cpu. Will XP take advantage of the dual core concept, or is this something only Vista uses? Also, am I correct on this (if not, let me know), but isnt the concept of a multi core cpu to do the following:

Max 1 chip out and then switch a program or whatever over to the second chip?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Windows XP will work fine with Dual Core. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe you need Service Pack 2 (1?).

There is also a patch from AMD to get Windows to recognize both cores, if all else fails.

...yes, WinXP (Home and Pro) supports multiple CPU cores.

Multiple cores allow multiple threads to execute at the same time. These can be part of one process (what you probably mean by "program") or multiple processes. One core doesn't have to be "maxed out" to use the second one.

you just run the system like a single core computer

you will see things run as fast and as smooth as a pentium 4, except when you play games and encode, you will notice faster performance

X2 is a nice processor, don't expect too much out of it, however

good luck

Anyone else agree with this comment?

Technically, yes. The X2 is a lower end processor for budget minded people. If you want real performance, go with the Opteron chip or Intel Core 2 Duo.

Opterons are just cherry-picked A64 X2s. If you run them at stock speeds they perform identically; they just may be more likely to overclock better. Semprons are the budget AMD line.

A fast C2D chip can be considerably faster at some things (like bulk media encoding), but it's not like an A64X2 3800+ is "slow".
