So I got a new pc and have gotten to the point where all hardware is installed and working. I installed windows and everything was going great as I arrived at the point I was installing my GPU software, Steam, Spotify, MS Office etc.

For whatever stupid reason I decided to grab the disk that came with my motherboard and install the drivers on that and disaster followed. First is started rebooted sequentially after each driver install resulting in about 9 reboots back to back in rapid succession. After the reboot of the 9th driver install windows informed me of a problem and required I return to an earlier state.

My worst fears were realized when all the software I had previous installed was seemingly wiped, everything was gone!

Windows required me to go through the restarting process picking a color and a password + username and all that.

It's very important to note I used the same password and username I employed on the first setup of the new win 8.1.

The real problem is that i'm now at a state where I have to go through the arduous task of reinstalling my software but as I look at my SSD I realize i'm using about 25% of it's capacity now. I'm using 41 gb for a windows 8.1 install and my graphics drivers, that cannot be right. The requirement for windows range about 16 gb so I must have my copies of steam, Spotify, MS office hidden in some deep inaccessible region of my SSD thanks to this catastrophic mainboard driver installation.

When I reboot my PC I cannot find any option to find another account that my old stuff may be under.

Is my only hope now a reformat or wipe of the SSD ?

I just went to recovery and did a "remove everything and re-install windows" and it got me back down to 17 Gb install. Took about 30 minutes to clear a 240 GB SSD. I cannot say for certain if i had mistakenly created some sort of duel windows 8.1 partition, if so it sets the precedent for my first successful partition.

I will do as you say and go direct to source. There are so many files on this included disk and many of them are unnecessary. Maybe its' a reasonable rule to never use the driver disk that comes packaged with your motherboard. I know my first system build Epox Kt333 i did not use the motherboard disk and everything went fine.
