Concealed Carry Class at Work Today

It was a little strange to have so much gun talk, and what amounted to a legal lecture at work. But everyone gathered into the conference room today and we were given the class and certifications to get our Louisiana concealed handgun licenses. It only took about 2 hours. A far cry from when I got my Texas CHL, which took ~10 hours of classroom time.

Anyway, it was nice to get to do something cool and useful at work. :thumbsup:

They also discussed open carry being legal in Louisiana, which I already knew, but I've only seen one guy do it, ever. According to the cop teaching the class, the DA has no problem prosecuting you for disturbing the peace if you open carry in town. Not exactly how I imagined open carry working. :\

Wait, in just two hours you guys can be qualified to carry and fire a weapon? Or is that just to be able to concealed carry a weapon you're already qualified to use?

Better than GA. Fill out the form for the magistrate and presto.

The state allows open carry, but the towns probably have their own laws.

PA has open carry but a lot of law enforcement people don't like it. Local laws cannot preempt the state law. I can understand how frustrating it would be to have to respond to "man with a gun" calls to 911 when no crime has been or is being committed. Although I'm not sure why it should alarm anyone that someone happens to have a gun in a holster while minding their own business. To me that would indicate the person is not going to cause trouble because I don't see bad guys carrying openly.

In PA just fill out a form, pay some money, and wait a few weeks. should be free though. although if you really get technical, none of this should be required at all, 2nd amendment and all...

the DA is a airbag. he can try and prosecute but the judge will laugh him out of the courtroom

Few weeks, I got mine in a few minutes. Checked the county sheriff's website, found the schedule for when they were visiting a local town. Went in, sat behind one other person. Filled out some paperwork they submitted for an instant background check. I got my pic taken and walked out with my freshly made card.

Mind if I ask what kind of buisness you work in OP? Also, how big of a company?

It surprises me that a company would offer a CCW class at their place of business at all (outside of the gun industry and related fields obviously). Just curious if I can find a cool company like that near me :p

I was actually surprised that the higher ups let this go on as well. As an organization we are obsessed with risk and safety. I'd say our average employee spends about 10% of each week being talked to about safety, doing some kind of training or filling out safety related paperwork.

This is the US Army, btw. :biggrin:

TN took 8 hours and range time. Now living in GA and soon to become resident. Form, money, prints, your good.

Where do you get this "qualified to use" BS.
If I purchase an Item I don't need to be qualified to use it.
I'm of the belief that the 2nd Amendment gives us the right to carry a firearm, but I will abide by my states laws and obtained a CHL (10 hours class time that could have been done in 2 hours)

Agree with that but I would like some voluntary training just for safety sake.

liar. you can carry concealed without a permit now, true, but to get the permit the requirements havent changed. 8 hr class, fingerprints and up to 60 days for the bg check. 60 bucks. reciprocity is the probably the only benefit to holding a permit in az now, and is likely worth it if you travel in the 33 states that accept az cert as valid.

liar. The requirements for the permit have changed, you can now get a permit through any NRA safety course or through the hunter education course by the Arizona Game and Fish department, in addition to the 8 hour course specified under the previous law.

Regardless, you don't need a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

while the course is offered by many new sources, the 8 hr course req is still there. the discussion was on getting the permit, not whether you could carry without one. to get the permit in az you still have to meet the reqs lined out in
http://www.azdps.gov/services/concealed_weapons/ the state laws.
