Computers slow after power outage.

Me and my girlfriend have two computers in are house and the power went out about 4 days ago. Since then are computers have been going really slow. We both run vista. Her computer is taking about 6 or 7 mins to even start up. Her computer is going much slower than mine, however both have slowed down noticeably.

I have run virus scans, deleted newer updates, updated drivers, and stopped all start up apps with no results.

Other weird stuff is going on as well. Explorer keeps crashing on both PCs. Sometimes games say there is no DirectX 9 compatible hardware. She has a 7600gs and I have a 8800gts 320mb.

At my wits end as to what could be causing this.

Try running chkdsk with '/r' switch/option on the boot partition.

e.g.

chkdsk c: /r

where 'c' is your boot partition.

And the boot time is the same? If it is, try booting into safe mode and keep track of the boot time while at it.

If there is no significant difference in boot time, try executing 'sfc /scannow'. That will repair or replace any corrupted/missing OS files. Here's a link explaining its use:
