Computers can't see each other

I recently added another computer at home and am attempting to network it to my existing computer using peer to peer. Computer 1 already had a nic card connected to my cable modem. I am not trying to share internet connection yet, just trying to network for now. I installed a new Linksys nic card in each computer and a brand new cable. I have added tcp/ip protocols and assigned ip numbers and subnet info. Both are running Win98 SE, I have disabled my firewall, workgroup names are the same, all nic cards appear to be fine in device manager, I did notice that the green light is not lit on the back of either card. I have tried everything that I know (which isn't much). Please help, I know I need to supply more information, but am not sure. Thanks in advance.

That was the problem, I got my hands on a hub and used the standard cables, and it worked! Only problem now is I can see one way but not the other, but I'll figure it out. Thanks for the help.
