Game related problems under Windows 8
1. Batman Arkham City crashed/refused to run.
2. TrackMania 2 exhibited texture issues for both NV and AMD.

Looks like for now Windows 7 is still slightly superior for gaming performance and is more stable.

Are there true final drivers out for Windows 8 yet?

What do you mean by "final" drivers? The drivers will continue to evolve over the next 3-5 years of W8's existence. What's a final driver for Windows 7? I think Windows 8 drivers will improve but so far with current drivers it's worse than W7 in performance or stability. For someone buying Windows 8 today, it's good to know that there are going to be issues in some games.

You know, I knew drivers had pushed the 7970 ahead of the 680 in a lot of games, but I didn't realize how much. Also at 1920x1200, good job AMD driver team.

This is pretty damn good, early release n drivers, very little issues and practically identical performance (outside 1-2 games).

Microsoft has done well, I was worried W8 is too focused on tablet/arm and would falter for PC gaming, but its looking good.

One thing I found odd in the Toms review of the 7970x2, they show the 690 beating the 7970x2 @2560x1400. What do you make of that? Judging but the 7970 vs. 680 I'm a little surprised the 7970x2 was slightly slower at least based on the 1200p - 7970 pretty good beating of the 680.

But do many (any?) desktop users want that phone/table UI? It seems to me that the other little low-level improvements Win8 brings are the kind of things you get with every Linux kernel upgrade. Difference being that
  1. with Linux you don't have to pay anything (of course)
  2. you can upgrade the kernel without having to upgrade anything else.
Plenty of things wrong with Linux as a mainstream desktop OS but updates are not one of them.

Its most likely the extremely aggresive powersavings of win8 to fit it on tablets thats the cause. Drivers dont really affect much since you can use the same drivers. And even considering Win8 ships without Areo....

Yet another reason to ditch Win8 and stay with Win7.

And seems MS knows people wont change without a little push:

Looks like AMD did a good job with windows 8 drivers, nice job on their part. With that said, is anyone bothering with windows 8? I really see no reason at all to opt for windows 8.

I'm trying to find stuff that interests me, but I really can't.

Battlefield 3 has traditionally been slightly faster on nvidia, as far as I can tell. Although AMD is pretty close or even with the latest drivers, whatever it is.

I'm glad AMD is now showing Nvidia how its done.

In other news, looks like I'm sticking with W7 for the time being.

For one, there's no 8x MSAA in BF3, unless Toms forced through drivers (does it even work?).

It would be pretty hilarious if they based a benchmark on override AA. You don't do that because override AA has a lot of overhead and isn't optimized.

That said, the setting is likely ignored in game. I don't think you can do override AA in bf3.

I feel pretty happy for this. I simply don't want Win8, and with the gaming performance being similar, I won't have a bad conscience for keeping Win7

I wonder to what extent DX11.1 can improve performance though

Prolly the same was 10.1, nothing.

W8 looks nice but since no major gains, I will stick with W7 too.. too much hassle to use their new UI.

Wouldn't say DX10.1 was nothing. Battleforge for example is known to perform noticably better in DX10.1.

DX11 games like BF3(or Shogun 2, Civ5) should also be using DX10.1, though there are no benchmarks comparing DX10 to DX10.1 in those games AFAIK

I should have quoted the benchmarks that kind of make me wonder wth. See the comparison. A single 7970 at 1200p is pretty nicely beating the 680.

Then at higher resolutions the 7970 is usually a bit fast iirc. Now put two of them together.

This is what makes me wonder.

Don't really see a reason to upgrade to 8, as I have had a great time with 7. I do, however, find Microsoft Surface interesting.

I can't find this review on Tom's Hardware anywhere? Got a link? I'm trying to find out what drivers they are using, but this review doesn't exist.
