computer works for 10 secs then shuts down

Somehow in the process of hooking a friend's computer to his HDTV downstairs it started having power trouble. It boots up for 5 or 10 secs then promptly powers down. It never did this before, but he did say there was a spark when he hooked up the power cable to the socket. Any ideas what the problem might be? thanks for the replies
