Computer won't turn on

I have a 1.2 Athelon chip on a ECS K7VZA motherboard. The board has just been replaced because the previous one was defective. I installed the chip on the board and put everything together. I hit the switch and nothing happened. I have tried a new switch and a different power supply. Before I take it all apart (again), I have 2 questions. Could this be caused by the CPU not being properly installed? Maybe a bent pin, it went together pretty easily but. And could another bad motherboard cause the problem? I would appreciate any help that you could give me. Also any advise about a better board to replace this one with. Thanks Lynn

make sure the CMOS jumper is not in the clear or reset position and make sure nothing si grounding the motherboard to the case

The Motherboard is clear and not grounded. The CMOS jumper is in the correct position. Thanks for those suggestions. My problem still remains.

could be a faulty cpu...two faulty motherboards in a row would be highly unlikely. do you mean the first motherboard was working, then died, or it too was new, and you couldn't get it to boot.

you said, "nothing happened", are the fans getting power? (you did have the cpu fan on the athlon, right?....)

no beeps, etc? if not, it still sounds like a power supply problem

The first motherboard was working, the computer started locking up and we traced it down to either the motherboard or the CPU. I sent both back and the CPU chcked out OK and the motherboard was defective. When I said nothing worked, nothing worked. The case fans, CPU fan and it doesn't post. I tried another power supply and another switch, the results were the same, nothing worked. My plan is to take it all apart today and start over. I'll update with any results. Thanks, Lynn

Sounds like something's shorting the power supply, possibly the motherboard. Can you test the PSU on another motherboard? If the PSU works on another motherboard, sorry to say, but it's RMAland for you again. ;(

Check Your power button as well(wires may not be making contact)...those damn things can cause havoc since no one ever suspects them

Not sure why they took the list of troubleshooting tips off the start of this thread. There were a lot of good suggestions in there for problems like yours.

The first thing to do is go to "minimum configuration" cpu, motherboard and power supply. You can even take the motherboard out of the case and lay it on the anti-static bag to be sure there is no possibility of a short. If you at least get the fans to spin, then add the boot drive, video card, mouse and keyboard.

If you still get no power-up then you have a definite hardware problem. If the power supply fan isn't spinning, then it most likely points to a short (ot overload) somewhere.
