My wife has a POS computer... but she likes using it for some reason. Anyhow, she shut it down and the next day pressing the power button does nothing. Its all plugged in, but pressing the button doesnt do anything. I openned the case, and when you press the power button, you can see the CPU fan twitch a bit, but thats all the life that comes out of it. Is it likely the power supply? Or could it be something else? Thanks

Hi there,
I don't think it could be the power supply because there is activity when u press the power button. With older machines they can be a bit funny about booting if something has been changed, such as jumper setting or onboard vga external lead the wrong way etc. The first thing to do is unseat everything within the machine such as RAM, graphics card, sound card etc and reseat them to make sure everything is A OK and no lose items or dust is there. If it still will not boot it may be the cpu is damaged, try and remove and reseat that as well. If it still will not boot try a spare power supply but I don't think that it will make much differance.

Hope u get it running again......

Contrary to what Billibob says, I bet it's a defective power supply.

Try another one and give it a shot. It's like a 2 min ordeal if you've got a spare one laying around.

If the PC has an AGP vid card, try reseating it. I've worked on PCs where the card came loose and prevented the PCfrom booting up. Also if the PC is old, the CMOS battery may have gone dead and that can prevent boot up. If this doesn't work, then definitely check the PSU.
