Ok so let me down some of the issues I was experiencing before this happened. I, like many of you, play WoW. Well every once in awhile my graphics card would give me a overheating warning because it reached 120 degrees. That was only a few cases though. There would be times i'd play for a few hours and have no problems at all...but every once in awhile my fps would drop from 60 down to a crawling 4-6 fps. For absolutely no reason at all. Also when this would happen my entire game would start crashing.
You know what it looks like when you're playing a game and you would fall through the map? All of a sudden everything's blue and buildings would just disappear. That would occasionally happen to me. I'd be outside a building and could see everyone inside it...but couldn't see the physical building they were in. Gave me sort of a xray vision lol. But unfortuneately it wasn't that great because it's kind of hard trying to navigate inside a building when you can't see the ground, stairs, or walls. Well when this would happen i'd exit WoW. Sometimes when I did that i'd get back to my desktop and everything would be in 640x480 and I couldn't change it. Now I could restart the machine and usually be good to go from that point. Makes no sense I know.
I tried updating the driver, rolling back the driver, and reinstalling WoW. All of this was a temporary fix. I figured ok my graphics card must be going out. Well I went to go smoke the other day and came back inside to my computer being off. I thought it was kind of odd and tried to turn it back on. Mind you I was playing WoW at this time when it decided to shut itself off. Well for some reason it wouldn't come back on. I tried disconnecting things one by one and even tried having only the 20pin and 4 pin connector on my motherboard to see if I could get it to start booting up...nothing. Then during the troubleshooting I flipped the switch on and off on the back of the power supply and after doing that a few times I heard a loud POP! Ya I knew I was fvcked then.
So I went out and got a new power supply but still couldn't get the system to power on. I hear a light very brief whine when I hit the power button but nothing else happens. Both power supplies seem to be supplying power to the board as the green power light indicator on the board is on. I tried switching out graphics cards and nothing. I tried removing the cmos battery and putting it back in and nothing. Now I leave it up to you guys. Any other ideas of what may have happened and what I could do without having to buy a new motherboard to see if that's the issue?
Computer specs:
amd 3200+ 939
asus a8v deluxe 939 mb
2x 512 corsair value
evga 6800gt 256mb
audigy 2 zs
74gb raptor
160gb seagate
250gb seagate
dvdrom
dvd burner
nothing oc'ed
Cliffs:
Computer won't turn on
Thought it was the graphics card due to random graphics issues
tried swapping out the card to no avail
heard a loud pop when messing with the power supply and swapped that out to no avail
Ok got home last night and tried a different 4 pin connector from my new power supply (they were labeled wrong...why you need 3 I have no idea) and my system powered on. Now all the fans spin up but the system won't post. The red light stays on, on the front of my tower and it won't switch to showing me video. I've tried a different graphics card but still nothing. I've even tried disconnecting things AGAIN one by one to try and find the issue and nothing. I got a spare proc I am gonna try and use tonight but if anyone else has any ideas, by all means shout em out.
Also here's another thing to baffle you further. My 6800gt requires a molex power connector be plugged in to work. Otherwise it beeps. Now I forgot this once during my troubleshooting and sure enough the mobo yelled at me for not having it plugged in. But when I took all the ram out of my computer...I got no beeps whatsoever.
