Computer wont take DHCP...

Title says it all, when statically assigning an address it works fine and can ping the gateway - but wont ping by name only IP so DNS is all fritzy, tried a different NIC - same deal.

Flushed DNS and Re-registered, all firewalls are off, no onboard firewall or anything of the like. Any ideas?

FYI - Its Windows XP.

Where is the DHCP server, and does it have spare IP to give?

What it can Not ping by name?

Cant ping anything out side (on the 'neternet 🙂 )

Can ping the gateway fine though and the DNS server is on a domain...it works for everyone else.

Seriously please someone help this needs to be fixed asap, I've ran the netsh reset IP utility - essentially rebuilding the TCP/IP stack. I don;t know what else to do, I can ping outside but name resolutions are not coming back - no matter what damn DNS server I use, someone please help.

Search MS for "repair TCP/IP stack"

There's a manual process you can go through. It sounds like certain DLLs used by the stack are hosed or version mismatch. You can try reinstalling the latest service pack as a last resort.

have you checked the event log for any associated errors?

are you hanging on dhcp or recieving a default 169 address?

bump, seriously help - I have done everything short of just simply formatting the machine....I even got a log from hijack this if anyone is interested...

FYI - I have rebuilt the stack numerous times, used the tool to do it as well, edited the registry, deleted the nic reinstalled it, did different drivers, even put a different nic in all together. When statically assign I can ping other PC's and to the gateway, all other computers can hit the internet - but for whatever reason DHCP wont take on this nor will it go past the gateway to the internet whether static or not.

How many computer are on your LAN? If names aren't working have you checked your host files? Can you ping your DNS server? Is your DNS server being specified as your routers gateway or your ISPs DNS server? If it won't let you beyond the router, do you have a policy set in the router to limit internet access or an (allowed) list? Is this by chance wireless?

*EDIT*

Did you check your protocols to make sure you have the appropriate ones enabled?

PS: Have you checked for IP conflicts?

Can you directly ping an external ip address? Also, try doing:

ping gatewayip -t

while thats going, open a new window and do

arp -a

check the mac address of the gateway and compare it to your actual gatway device. I have seen people use the gateway ip on another computer which would cause only specific computers at certain locations to lose connection. Also to help troubleshoot something like that, is it possible to only plug in this computer to the router and leave everything else disconnected? I don't believe it to be hardware or software, I think it's directly a networking problem.
