Computer Wont Start

Ok, my brothers computer will not start, it wont power up even. I tested the power supply alone, and it works. I reset all the cables leading from the power/reset buttons, and unhooked/reconnected every thing in the case

I also tried switching the ram slots to no avail, as well as clearing the CMOS.

specs:

Abit AN8
AMD64 3000+ Venice stock
2x512mb Corsair Value Ram
Samsung floppy
Liteon CDRW drive
NEC DVDRW drive
EVGA 6800NU 256mb
Xclio 450BL PSU

Again, it doesn't boot, post, no activity at all, except the little red light on the motherboard lights up, and the num, scroll, caps lock lights on the keyboard blink when the power cord is plugged in

Oh yeah, he told me last night as he was going to sleep the computer turned its self on like magic
 
Does the computer stay on and can you boot it up manually now? If so then apparently your problem is fixed. If not then check to see if the motherboard is shorting out against the case. A good method of troubleshooting is to take out the motherboard w/ cpu, ram, and video card out of the case, and on a solid surface. Try to boot it up w/ just nessisary componants, no HDD, optical drives, PCI cards, usb devices except for keyboard if it is USB. Leave in keyboard, video card, mobo, cpu, one stick of ram. Boot it up and check, if it works then it may be a dieing south or north bridge failing to support appropriet power for usb, IDE channels, pci bus, etc. If it doesn't then take out the video card and try it with onboard video.
 
Did you plug in all your PSU plugs into your mobo? There's a 4 pin connector (12V) at the top of the board that requires connection too.

If you done this correctly, then mount your mobo. If it works outside, then screw your mobo directly to the mounts with screws provided w/o overtightening and no spacers.

As before, use the minimum of components to get your computer running. Hdd, Video card, CPU, RAM. If that works, then its another component that could be the problem.

If not, Abit RMAs are pretty easy thankfully. RMAing my samsung phone was a pain
 
Tried it out of case, no go

Also, i noticed his PSU makes a little screech noise, but it is quiet, where you have to have the case open and ear near it to hear the sucker.

I could try it with the PSU in my computer, but it only has a 20pin ATX connector instead of 24, would this matter if i dont do anything buy try to get it to boot?

Also, though the switch might be bad so i tried a different case with no luck
 
turns out it was his PSU, i tried an old Thermaltake 480w on it and it worked

I think hes just gonna buy a new one instead of RMA it
