Computer won't start..

So my sister phoned me last night saying that her computer would not start when attempting to turn it on. I'm assuming there are a number of problems that can be associated with this, but the PSU seems like the likely culprit. What steps should I do to figure out and isolate the problem?

Note: The PSU that is installed came with my case, which is an Antec SLK3700AMB. Should be pretty reliable but nothing lives forever.

By "would not turn on," do you mean that it doesn't boot Windows, or that it doesn't POST, or that it doesn't show any signs of life whatsoever (no fans turning, no drive activity)?

If it shows no signs of life at all, then they should check whether their surge supressor is turned off, and also the on/off rocker switch on the rear of the PSU, both of which you may have already had them check. Beyond that, I've got a whopping big list of no-POST/no-run issues for your perusal here, it's the top link there.

Like Sonic587 said, more info would probably help. Any lightning storms in the area at the time?

the computer will not start i.e. no fans turning, no hard drives, etc. for now i have limited information about the problem. i believe the computer was running and then all of a sudden stopped when nobody was around. apparently there were no signs of smoke or burning and no electrical surges.

i just wanted to get a jump start on this problem since im actually far away from my sisters computer. i'm heading up there in two weeks so that i can better identify the problem.

You can ask your sister to look at the fan on her power supply when she tries to start it. If the PSU fan doesn't turn, then the problem is either the power supply is not getting power or the PSU itself is bad. If the fan on the PSU turns for a half-second or tries to turn then the problem may be a device in the PC gone bad. When I first built my computer, then fan on my PSU would turn for half a second, stop, and then I would have to turn off the master power on the PSU to get it to respond, but with the same results as before. I found out that I connected my floppy power backwards.
