Computer wont start up

this is in another post, but it wasnt getting replied to, so this is easier for those who dont take the time to scroll down in the other post.

My cousin and I are putting together a computer, and we had it together, with no monitor, keyboard, etc, just to test if it worked and if the fans were blowing the right way. So, we used the USB thing with Diagnostic lights on it, and it said all good. So, we hooked up a monitor and keyboard, tried it, and then the lights said "either your CPU is broken, or not installed right." we can't fix it now, and there are details below (sorry if the info repeats)

The MSI motherboard came with their "D-Bracket 2" component; when we originally turned on the PC it went through the stages and all went well. However, once we plugged the monitor in, all four of the lights stayed red, and the description of that says "System Power ON - The D-LED will hang here if the processor is damaged or not installed properly."

Well, that's great, because it's installed properly as far as I know. It's an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ for socket 754. When the processor was installed, it went flush into the socket and was clipped in and the heatsink was placed on top of it and locked on.

As far as cooling agents go, we removed the agent originally on the HS and then spread Arctic Silver 5 on the CPU.

I really have no clue what's going on. I know that the D-Bracket thing isn't lying as nothing comes up on the monitor when we plug it all in/together.

(disregard my sig for this post--this is a different computer)

oh and another thing, when the computer did say it was all good, it just randomly shut off, but we turned it back on, and it said it was working, so we turned it off, and from then on it hasnt worked.

and another thing, the processor was dropped once and bounced quite a bit, landed on its pins, but that was before we turned on the rig...we did notice that the cpu didnt want to go into the slot, but after a while it did...i also was handling it by the pins (didnt mean to) so could those be damaged?

the computer gave the "all good" lights after all of this though...im so confused....

Hi Hans,

Maiy I first suggest you edit your intial post to list the components of the system in question. I see its a skt 754 with an MSI mobo, but no other details. Someone here may have the same exact mobo and therefor have some specific info to share.

Have you tried to get it to POST outside of the case yet? That would help eliminate any possibility of shorting to the case. Place the mobo on a phonebook or something similar (I like a phonebook cuz it has some height and allows for the lip of the gfx card to hang over the edge). Install only CPU (with HS+F), ram and vid card. Hook up monito, KB & mouse. And the PSU.

I usually leave the PSU in the case and just setup the mobo with parts next to it. This way I can use the power on/off buttons that are on the case too.

If this is one of your first builds, might be a good idea to reveiw mechBgon's guide to PC building. He's a member here, do a search by author. Click on one his posts. His sig has a link to his guide.

Amd 64 3000 754socket with AS5 and stock HSF
1gb kingmax pc3200 ram
seagate baracuda 160gb 7200rpm
MSI K8T800 neo mobo
Rosewill RE502 500watt PSU
Leadtek 6600gt agp
raidmax ATX-268WSP case
NEC DVD burner 16x +- dual layer

We've tried unplugging everything, but that didnt do anything

the cpu might be damaged as i managed to somehow drop it...it didnt seem to go into the socket that well either. BUT, even after that the D-lights said the compy was "all good", and the case was on, so i don't think it's shorting it...it worked twice until we installed the monitor and KB, and then it decided to say the cpu isn't installed right or is damaged...

It apparently wasn't game over on the original start up, so my guess would be that it gradually overheated...I believe this because we removed the "phase-change thermal compound" on the heatsink and then put some Arctic Silver 5 on the CPU as was suggested on an arctic silver guide we found.

Once the first boot successfully started (and showed that it was working on the diagnostic bracket), the computer shut off on it's own, so that would just solidify my guess that it's an overheating issue.

Hans,

I've seen your other post(s). I think you should take it back apart and remove that sticker you left on the backplate. Might be causing a short on the mobo.

I've also seen your comments about AS5 and a good amount of it on your cpu. As5 reqiures like a 1/2 grain of rice size amount. Too much is not good. Might wanna check out Arctic Silver's site for the application instructions as well.

1 & 1/2 grains with Artic Silver 5 to be precise. Also, do not smear it about on top of the processor, instead sit the heatsink straight on the processor (with AS5 applied) and turn it one degree to the right & also one to the left. Then finish locking down the heatsink & such. If you used AS5 and did not use this process, you will need to reseat the processor.
