Computer won't shutdown/using epox 8k7a

Everytime i try to shutdown my computer from windows, it closes windows and goes to a black screen, but my computer won't shutdown. I am using the epox 8k7a mobo and updated the bios to v6/6/2001. Also, when i do shutdown through windows, the floppy disk light remains on as though the computer is trying to access it. Any thoughts?

I am using the following:

- 1.4 GHz cpu (amd)
- Win ME
- epox8k7a mobo

Do you have Mcafee virusscan loaded? It has an option pertaining to accessing the floppy on shutdown. It will cause the computer to hang on shutdown with the floppy light on.

Just an idea.

I'm using a 1.33 Ghz TBird with Win2K on an Epox 8K7A and I'm getting almost the same problem, except my screen doesn't turn black, it just stays blue. I think it has to do with the Via 4-in-1's. Did you install those?

I had this problem in Win2000. You wanna know what it was (for me anyway)? I have a Logitech Internet Keyboard, and it was the keyboard software that was screwing it up. I uninstalled it, and it shut down normally. I'm almost more than certain that it's some software issue; check to see what you've got running in the background.

Do you have a Netgear FA311 network card? If so, there is a known problem with it causing shutdown problems on the 8K7A. No fix as of yet except to get a different brand NIC.

AFAIK and from personal experience, fa311's only cause REBOOT issues.

The reboot issue is what I experienced with the FA311 also. This almost sounds anti-virus oriented. Norton has a deal that checks the floppy on shut down too. See if you can disable this and check on microsoft's website for solutions to shut down problems.

Ok i disabled Norton and i turned off the "check floppy for viruses on shutdown" option, so now when i click shutdown it doesn't check the floppy, but the computer still won't shutdown.

When i click shutdown, windows closes and i get a black screen and it appears as though windows thinks the computer has shutdown or something, but the computer is still on and i don't get the "it is safe to turn off your computer" message.

I did update the bios for the Epox and i think this occured ever since then. Is there a way to change the bios back to what it was before?

Just reflash to the older bios, it should have made a back-up copy for you

Thanks for the update. I have a Netgear card, now I know why the MoBo was working fine before,

Thanks for your help guys, i decided to reformat and reinstall everything and now it shuts down! i don't know what it was.

Yep, thats the way to do it. I had the same problems with an Epox super7 board before (MVPG3). Reformatting was the easiest way to fix it.
