here is the basic specs of my rig:

amd xp2000+
epox 8k7a
512mb pc2100
radeon 8500

i just upgrades to windows xp from windows 98. when i was using win98, whenever i went to shutdown my pc... the pc would automatically turn itself off after like a 2 second delay. now that i have upgraded to windows xp, when i shutdown my pc, i get this screen telling me "it is not safe to turn off your pc". is there a way i get get rid of that? i remember back in the old dyas of AT mobo's where everyone got that messege, but how come i am still getting this messege? am i doomed to have to manually shutdown my pc everytime, or is there an easy fix for this? your help would be very much appreciated. thanx!

Start, Control Panel, Power Options. Click on the APM tab. Check the 'enable' box.

If that doesn't work, you may need to enable APM or ACPI in your system BIOS.

No easy fixes for shut down issues - there are about as many fixes for them as there are occurrences. A bunch of them are upgrades in need of a BIOS flash. This may be you, since that board came out before XP. Software conflicts would be the next leading cause, and you would determine this with safe mode and selective startup troubleshooting (Q192926). As bozo1 points out, you may have inhereted some power management settings from 98 that don't work with XP, see his fix. If none of this shed any light on the matter it could be that hardware, software or a driver that does not work wth XP. When you upgraded, did the installation program indicate any devices or programs that might have problems?

Its most likely a power management issue. It isn't hanging on shutdown, it just goes to the screen that says "It is now safe to turn off your PC." (I'm assuming he typoed his quote in the original message.)
