It's a PII 400 384MB ram and it's dual booting Win98 and XP. I installed drive image on its 10GB Fujitsu hard drive and used it to copy the contents onto a Western Digital 40GB 7200 rpm. So it is now running on the 40GB (I took the 10GB out). When I go to start > turn off, it looks like it's shutting down but a few seconds later it boots back up again by itself. It does the same thing when I press the power button on the case. The only thing that's different other than the fact that I copied it is I installed partition magic and drive image on it.

Cool, somebody has a slower machine than me. Half the speed in fact.

I think I had a similar problem. I fully detached the power cord and reconnected it...of course, I had to do this while the machine was on but afterwards it would shut down properly.

Possibility #2: you may have a bad PSU, especially if you have an old system.

This is generally an APM issue with Windows. Sometimes playing with the power management settings in the BIOS will fix it. Sometimes playing with the power management settings in Windows will. I haven't figured out a good procedure for this issue yet.

[Edit: Never mind. I misread the issue. I was thinking you were having a different issue then you are: that the machine wasn't turning off and instead displaying the it is now safe to turn off your computer message.]

It's actually my dad's/the "family" computer. My computer is an XP1900+ :D
I tried pulling the power cord out and then plugging it back in. It shut off correctly only one time. The next time my dad used the computer and turned it off, it just rebooted.
