Computer won't shut down after NIC install

Help!! I have an old Win 95B machine with a recently installed a 3Com PCI NIC. The card has the proper drivers, it works with a crossover cable to a laptop, but if the laptop is unpluged from the cable the machine hangs at the Win shut down screen. The only way to shut down the computer is to go in Control Panel/System and disable the hardward profile for the NIC. Then the machine shuts down properly. Any Ideas?? R.

Does it happen all the time, or only when the laptop has been connected during the current win95 session?

Only when the card has been enabled and the laptop unpluged.

When win9x shuts down, it first closes all running applications and services. Sounds like, when it's shutting down networking, it's running into a problem. Sometimes the network shutdown process produces a warning window that states you'll be disconnecting a network user, and asking if you're sure you want to do this - could be that at this point, expecting there to be a network user, and not finding it, the network close-down applet is hanging. Unsure what you can do to correct this. If your network is set up to connect to network resources at boot or logon, you might try changing the setting to connecting to network resources only when they are accessed ...and if you have mapped resources on the notebook, try getting rid of them. Post what happens.
