Computer won't readily post, but restarts fine...

I have an issue with a new build, It is vista x64, 4gigs of ram(Compatible with my mobo), Upgraded to Sp1.

Whenever i do a complete shutdown, It fails to post a few times, but after shutting off and turning back on a few times, it posts successfully and everything is fine. When it get it running, it couldn't be better, no problems, no BSODs nothing. If i select restart, it will restart fine, post fine. But if i give it a full shutdown, no luck, and i'm back to turning on and off.

Anyone have any clue what is going on here?

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3L
Gskill 4gig 1066
PC Power&cooling Silencer 610w
Sapphire 4870
Seagate barracuda 7200rpm 320g

When you say it fails to POST, do you mean you get POST errors? Or do you get no POST and no video to the monitor? How do you know its 100% stable in the OS, have you run Prime95, OCCT, or Linpack? Few things to start with:

1. Make sure all the hardware is seated correctly. Reseat it even if it is.
2. Test each stick of RAM individually using Memtest 86, you could have a bad stick.
3. Make sure you're at the latest BIOS.

Well when i say it doesn't post, I mean no video, but i'm currently unsure of the beep codes, as my case didn't come with a speaker, and my motherboard doesn't have an onboard speaker (I know, very very stupid, and unlucky). I was thinking of making my own speaker but haven't gotten around to it yet.


I have run Memtest and the ram is pristine (Lucky me for once).
And i have just updated to the latest bios for the board (revision 4).
Currently running OCCT test, and will follow up with linpack

I'm on the problem PC right now, I have to torture it to start, but once it's up, it runs like a champ...

Updated the bios? Tried with different combos of RAM? Tested with a known good power supply? Most of the time when I've seen this it turned out to be power supply related.

Hmm, That worries me, as I've spent a buttload on this powersupply. I figured a well named PSU would shield me from these worries...

Any way of testing the PSU itself?

Edit: After unplugging everything, reseating everything, and rotating my ram sticks, She's successfully booting from a full shutdown. Let's hope it stays that way, Thanks you guys.

I had an Abit board that I used for years that suddenly started freezing during the BIOS memory check. It'd read the total RAM amount, but would just sit there an never run the memory test. If I hit the reset button, it'd boot correctly.

I never did bother to figure out, since I moved to a new motherboard shortly afterwards, by, yeah, it's likely memory related.

Err.. Well, I've reseated the ram three times now, Quadruple checked connections and it still gives me problems.
After reformatting twice I'm just giving up, It works, as long as i keep shutting off and turning on.
It did prompt me with a windows error, I didn't manage to write it down but it said to run windows repair (vista) on the next boot. I did and then ran the startup repair and it said "Windows could find no problems". Ran the memory diagnostic, No problems there either.

How long did you let Memtest86 go? Did you verify you're at the latest BIOS?

A good digital power supply tester will give you great confidence, or reason to RMA. It will also make you the guru of your group as all builders (even hobbiests) should have one, but usually don't.
