Computer won't even turn on

My mom has an 8RDA+ epox based system I built for her. It has been having some problems, and she tried to turn it on once and apparently something happened and she smelt a burning smell. Now it won't even turn on. I've opened up the case and looked at the processor (an overclocked 1700+) which I thought was the problem and it looked fine. The core would be blackened or something if that was the problem yes?

I've pulled out the jumper and put it back in that you do when you mess up OC'ing and still nothing. I think the mobo (8RDA+) is to blame. Is there anything else I should do? Also, say I buy this 8RDA+PRO from newegg. Can I put in all the same components including the old HD, which has the OS loaded on it, and have it all work? Or will I have to reformat the HD (something which I cannot do--sensitive info).

Thanks for the help.

PSU is shot, or board is shot. You did put Brass standoffs on yoru case right? Is there a light on your motherboard that indicates it gets power?

The ethernet port still glows green. Does that mean for sure it is the mobo?

Don't know what brass standoffs are but the system had had been running smoothly for over 2 years.

It sounds like the power supply is dead dude. Try sniffing out the fan of the PS. Do you have another power supply you can test it with?

No other PSU to test it with, only have my computer and I don't wanna take it out. Do you really think it's the PSU even though that green ethernet light turns on? I flipped the PSU switch off and the green light went off too. Back on and it went on.

Look closely at the capacitors on the 8rda+ too...any of them swollen or leaky? My 8rda+ died in much the same way. The capacitors were bad (as they were on many boards from that era). Look closely...

Could also be the PSU. Sniff the vent holes around the PSU, if the burned smell is strongest there...its probably PSU.

My 8RDA+ died last night... I tried several PSUs with it and the LAN light lit up but it was dead overall.

I narrowed it down to board with different videocards and ram too.

I suppose it's possibly processor, but I didn't feel like taking that out to test (plus some of the capacitors on the board were leaking a little and looked like an explosion could be on the horizon heh).

EDIT: whoa, yep 🙂 capacitors

It's more than likely capacitor problem...that board has a 3 yr warranty. RMA it to Epox. THey took care of me pretty quickly when my board croaked.

Slap an Abit NF7-S in there, that's a close match. Your windows installation should be able to take that in stride in this case (no pun intended) 😉

I took it as a sign to upgrade 🙂
