Computer Won't Budge

Peace, please help!!

When I press the power button, NOTHING HAPPENS. There's no activity in the motherboard or processor or anywhere.. I have disconnected all units except the cpu and mobo. All wire connections are secure.

However, when I unplug the powercord, I hear the brief "ffeuw" noise.. you know, that noise when things power down?

Well, I'm stuck. If I could get some help I'd appreciate it!! THANKS

Welcome to the Forums Tribute 🙂 I wonder if the Power button is either 1) plugged into the wrong pins on the motherboard, or 2) faulty. Could you cough up some info on your system, such as what motherboard you have, what case, and what power supply for starters? Thanks 🙂

First check the power Switch plug and make sure it is on the right two pins. If it is, check and see if your Clear CMOS jumper is in the right spot....I fixed a computer the other day becasue the Clear COMS jumper was in clar CMOS, instead of nornal.

Thanks for the warm welcome Bgon and for the replies. I used to lurk here back when I had the time. 😉

This computer has worked perfectly in the past. I'm running an Abit KG7 and an Athlon XP 1800. The PSU is an Antec 115/230V. My case is oldskool alienware with the hydrolic bay door.

I've checked the pins and they seem to be in the proper spots. Maybe it went bad.. hmm. CCMOS1 is in the default position.

thanks again.

Perhaps the case's power button is faulty. Try this: disconnect the case's power-button wire from the motherboard and simply make a momentary electrical connection on the motherboard's pins using a metal object. If the system now starts up, well there's your culprit 🙂 Otherwise, maybe try another good-quality power supply to help narrow down what the problem might be. Do you have any extra computers to play Dr. Frankenstein with? 🙂

did u accidently flip the switch on the back of the psu, if it has it at all....many a times while messing around and getting frustrated i forget to switch it back on and then i'm like WTF IS WRONG NOW!!!!!😀

Damnit...

Looks like i'll need to find a new PSU!

Thanks for the help amigos. You haven't seen the last of me! *mwuahaha* (fades to silence)

Before you buy a PSU, you can quickly test a couple of things to make sure that's the problem. It may be the power switch (as others noted) or the power up logic on your motherboard, instead.

1. The front panel switch just makes a momentary connection to the logic that starts the system. To test it, all you have to do is pull the connector, and short the two pins with a screwdriver, paper clip, etc. If that starts the system, all you need is a replacement switch.

2. If you have another machine available, try your PSU on another system or your system with another PSU. You don't have to mount the PSU in the chassis. Just put the two machines side by side, and run the wires from one to the other.

These tests are free, and they will confirm the problem before you spend the money trying to fix the wrong thing.

Good luck. 🙂

I'm back.

So I decided to purchase a new PSU. Do you guys have recommendations?
What-all hardware is in the system? Do you want to pave the way for a high-end video card down the road a year or two, or just buy for your present setup?

It's all ancient compared to today's top picks; Soundblaster Live!, Geforce3, 512mb PC2100, a DVD drive and CD-RW drive. I'm going to get a 450W PSU this time to replace my [supposedly] broken 400W.

I will upgrade my videocard later in the year when Tribes: Vengeance comes out! I used to be a hardcore gamer in Tribes2 when my computer was running flawlessly. I was =ToS*h00t*=

I was asking because the GeForceFX 6800 is coming out soon, and a 480W+ power supply is recommended for that. And a year ago 480W was like "what on earth for?" and two years ago 350W was "overkill" and three years ago we were patting ourselves on the back for having a 300W PSU... so you sort of see a trend here. A decent PSU should have a lifespan of several years, and if you wanted to spend the extra for an Enermax 651-series or Antec TruePower550, it could end up being one less PSU that you have to buy when the GeForce 8800 comes out in two years and stipulates a minimum 550W PSU or whatever.

Otherwise, how about an Enermax 465-series, or an Antec TruePower 430 or 480, or Antec SL450, or Sparkle Power, or I hear good remarks about the Fortrons... just not a cheapie trash-in-a-shiny-box one 🙂

Good points.

What a coincidence.. the Antec TP430 was what I was considering at newegg. $67.00

I think I'll be satisfied with that.
