Computer wont boot

Comuter Spec:

Gigabyte GA-8KNXP motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 "prescott" 3.2ghz
1.5gb Crucial DDR 333mhz RAM
GeForce4 Ti4400 Graphics card
Enermax 350w PSU

My computers been in the above incarnation since last august... running without fault or crash for ~ 10 hours a day each day. Then, a few weeks back I come home to find its crashed and theres no video being sent to the screen. Turn off, turn back on, fans spin, drives power up, but no display, no beeps, no boot.

I've tried swapping the graphics card, psu, processor, all to no avail.

Strangely, the cd drives seem to be making their noise as they do on post twice instead of the usual once... dunno if that means anything.

I've been busy with finals for my degree so not had a chance to sort nething, but have finished now so want it up and running again! Both mobo and cpu are under warranty, but not sure what the problem is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You might start by switching to the Gigabyte's backup BIOS, I believe there's a jumper for that? If that doesn't help, perhaps find another quality-brand 350W+ power supply to borrow for testing.

If you disconnect EVERYTHING except:
cpu/fan
case speaker
psu

Even disconnect all the headers, to switch on, touch the 2 power switch contacts on the header with a screwdriver - don't worry - it won't spark you.

If you don't get any beeps this way, then it is safe to assume that the problem lies with the mobo or psu.
If you do get beeps, then add RAM next etc till no beeps.

Did as you said... unplugged everything, turned it on (with a known to work cpu in) and still no beeps.

As ive tried another power supply already which is also known to work, you think its safe to say its the mobo? It's a couple of weeks under a year since I purchased it from dabs, so I'll get an RMA and send it back.

Cheers for you help

Sent the board back this morning... Fingers crossed that was the problem so this sorts it!

Just a quick question though... what could cause a board to die all of a sudden like that? No instability problems or anything, then come in one day and its dead. I obviously don't wanna go putting in my replacement mobo only for it to happen again, e.g. if my psu fried it?

Could be static -from dust most likely,
Temps caused an already 'structurally weak' board to fail quicker etc etc

Anything that works on as tight as specifications as todays mass produced mobos are gonna throw up a few failures along the line.
Saying that, I hope it is the mobo that needs RMA.

So, my mobo arrives back from dabs from gigabyte this morning. It came back in the same packaging as I sent it in so couldn't tell if it was my board or not. It wasn't covered in dust like mine so possibly a new one.

Anyway, laid it out on the antistatic bag ontop of the box and plugged in the bare essentials... both power cables, one stick of ram, cpu and heatsink, graphics card, speaker and power plugs... Hit the button, and same as ever 🙁

Everything powers up, but theres no beeps and nothing sent to the monitor. Unplug everything bar the cpu, still the same. Try my other cpu, still the same.

I know a fair bit about computers but I seriously have no clue what to do now. It's got to the point where if I knew something that knew more than me about computers I'd give them £100 and ask them to fix it!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i've actually had the same problem on 3 different computers (not my own, friends/family) in the past 2 weeks. One is a laptop, the other 2 are desktop PC's...

my first thought when i heard about this problem was a faulty HD. as the PSU and MB in one of the desktops came straight from my old PC. I'll know more of this problem in the coming days as i work on these 3 computers. if anybody finds anything of relevance to this problem, please do not hesitate to post.

Did you try another vid card? You don't have to deal with Windows finding new hardware. If you get as far as seeing a splash screen, you'll have your answer.

It's not a faulty Hard Disk or any drive because I've not got any plugged in! Only the bare minimum as I said.
