Computer Wont Boot

My girlfriends HP computer has recently quit booting up. I can attempt to boot in safe mode but as soon as I choose an operating system it restarts and I have to do the whole thing again. I know I could just start from scratch again with the HD but she wants her old files and pictures off of her computer. Is there any way I can put her HD in my computer as a slave drive and copy all the necessary files off of it even though it has its failty OS on there now? Thanks a lot in advance.
