Computer wont boot :(

A little while back, my friend accidently cracked his core when trying to remove his heatsink. He was applying new thermal paste, but when he started it back up again the fans would spin for less than a second, then shut off. Holding down the power button would keep the fans spinning but it would not post. Today he installed his new cpu and it still does the same thing. I am not sure of the specs besides that it is an AMD system with an athlon XP cpu, and a geforce 4 (mid-range card i think). The powersupply has more than 400 watts so it should be giving enough juice.

Anyone know whats going on here?

yeah, check for loose screws or mounts. Something similar happened to me where I wasn't using a spacer and I had a loose screw, and it kept shorting the motherboard out.

Sounds to me like he is installing the heatsink backwards. That would account for the cracked core and also the emergency thermal shutdown you're seeing. Refer to Figures 7, 13 and 14 of this guide and take note of how the heatsink has a step cut into its base, plus an asymmetrical clip, and why the step is there. Good luck! 🙂

Without detailed instructions on what he did/changed, and alist of system parts, there's very little ANYONE can do for you. Some basics though...

1. Fans spin...everything shuts down = sounds like every power supply failure I've ever had.

2. If the computer doesn't even get to POST, there's very little you can do, other than swapping out parts. Double check all the connections. Double check the HSF mounting. Don't just READ it in the thirty help posts...actually DO IT 🙂

3. Last resort...pull everything out of the case and try it. Though...if he hasn't pulled out the mobo recently....this probably wouldn't help.

well I doubt that its the mobo shorting out on anything, all he did was put in a new cpu. the only thing that I think would short it out would be a small grain of arctic silver, but I already checked for anything like that. We tried another power supply, though it was only a 220 watt out of an e-machine, and we still got the same problem. I'll tell him to check how he arranged his heatsink today.
