I bought a stick of this 256MB PC133 ram to install in a HP Pavilion XE793 which was running on a 64MB PC100 and a 128MB PC100. When I installed the 256 chip along with the 128 the computer would start to boot, but before it got to where Windows starts to boot it rebooted on it's own and kept repeating this. I took out the 128MB stick and tried just the new 256MB stick, the boot hung on the blue HP splash screen that covers the POST info at the start of booting. Is this ram just not compatible?

Your first guess is probably right and the ram is not compatable. The early computers that used PC100 ram always had this problem. You could always get Crucial ram, but it will cost you twice as much. The problem is your computer is probably worth only $250 whether it has 64mb or 512mb ram in it. It is still perfectly serviceable for office apps, and 512 ram will help with windows, especially XP.
