Computer won't boot. Possible SSD or MB issue.

I was using the top rig in my sig last night and my programs became unresponsive. I pushed the reset button and it wouldn't boot. I've tried a new data cable and tried plugging it in a different slot. Sometimes it shows up in the bios and sometimes it doesn't. My Windows 8 DVD and image CD don't see the drive when trying to install or restore an image. When booting Normally I see the blue window with spinning circle below. Right now it has said "preparing for automatic repair" for 5 min. with no HD activity light blinking.

What should I try next?

Can you plug the SSD into an external enclosure, connect it to the other computer and see if it is detected / can be interacted with properly?

I don't think it will work in my ext. enclosure. It's an old rosewill USB 2.0/esata enclosure.

I'm downloading Linux mint on the old rig which I gave to a family member. Hopefully it will let me use my computer with a live cd. I'm using a tablet right now 🙁

If it's a SATA enclosure, I'd expect a SATA SSD to work in it. The only thing I'm unsure about is whether XP would recognise the possible GPT partition layout (assuming that the main system uses UEFI). If it can see a partition layout though in Disk Management, that would be a start.

- edit - the answer regarding GPT is probably not:

You could try booting a live CD then connecting the SSD via USB.

The old rig is now Windows 7 and both rigs were not installed in uefi mode. I'll look if the enclosure will work. It may also be for 3.5" only.

Ah, then you don't need to worry about GPT partitions.

I assume you mean that the enclosure might lack screw points for 2.5" SATA devices - then don't try to enclose the SSD? Lose the enclosure's cover (and possibly its access LED), and just run it like that for testing.

Whenever I go to explore the ssd with the old rig it locks up the machine. The Intel rst does recognize the drive by name. It says its status is normal whatever that means. It's also says system disc: No.

It probably is the drive, but unless you like your systems to hang on a regular basis, connect suspect disks via USB. You might then be able to run data recovery software on it and/or run a full disk check once any necessary data backup has been achieved/attempted.

OK, I'll try it with USB later today. I give up for now. Today has been full of fail and I need some rest. Thanks for your help Mikey!

I tried connecting it to the old computer with USB. The drive would show for a little bit and then disappear. I had to keep turning it off and on. I did get to look in admin tools and the drives said healthy but it disappeared shortly after. I went ahead and ordered a new drive because I need my computer. If there is anything else I can try please let me know. This is my first ssd so I don't know how to troubleshoot or how they die.

No, it sounds like you've taken it as far as it can go, I can't think of anything else to try.

Anything left on its warranty?

I think it has a 3 year warranty so it should have a little over 1 year left. I'm kinda worried about them recovering data though. I don't know how well samsung scrubs the drives to refurb them or their employees rep for not nosing around. It would make a nice drive for the old machine.

Fwiw I ordered a 250GB bx100 since it had a coupon.
