Computer won't boot live-CD or read CD-R

I was trying to boot knoppix today, but my current computer's CDROM drive simply refuses to comply and instead makes strange gashing sounds. It wont get past the title screen, or if I'm lucky, it'll boot halfway and then stop reading. I tried the same CD with another computer and it works fine. Also, my drive won't read burned CD-Rs in windows without having the same problem. How screwed up is my CDROM drive?

btw my drive model is a 48X CD-ROM from Samsung that came with my Dell 4550

You can try one of those CD lens cleaners if you want. They are available at any electronics store for around $10. The bristles on the underside of the disc will clean the laser. Aside from that, you will probably need a new drive. If you are under warranty from Dell, they will take care of it free of charge for you.

New CD-ROM drives are only a little more than those lens cleaners ...

Indeed. Some drives just refuse to read certain burned disks, just go buy a new one.

Those strange noises seem to suggest to me that the drive is dying anyway. You can buy a brand new cdrw for about 20-30 dollars these days.

I also recommend you replace the drive.
