Computer wont boot 4 times out of 5.

I have just put together a new computer.

The problem is it won't boot, it won't even POST, 4 out of 5 times but the 5th time i works without a hitch, in fact im posting from it now.

When you press the power button it starts up, you hear the CD and HDD spin up but nothing shows on the screen and no POST-beeps are heard.

I've tried changing slots for the memory, trying a different PSU, trying a different vidcard and disconnecting any unnedded cables from the MB. In desperation, I have also tried another monitor andanother powersupply cable. Nothing helps.

It is a 2,4Ghz AMD processor and an ASRock K7S8X motherboard.

Please help, it is my birthday present for my father now that he turns 50 in two days, and I need it working!

Hmm, how about flash the bios on a successfull boot? just make sure you run memtest first, to make sure you don't get an error during the flash process

i dunno man, i wouldnt flash a bios on a board that unstable....i suggest taking the motherboard out of the case and put it on some anti-static wrap and try booting it without it being mounted in the case. maybe its grounding out or something causing it to be intermittent.

Correct, sounds like a grounding issue. Do try removing the motherboard from the case and see if acts the same. If not, you have something shorting out.

Tried flashing the BIOS, now it wont boot at all.

I will try taking it out of the case. Thankyou for your help.

Will it POST? Be clear here because booting and posting are two entirely different beasts. A no post situation is dire.

2 things could be wrong, the cpu could be damaged (and amazingly still working) or you could have a problem with your power supply. How many HD's and CD-ROMs do you got? Try taking the cd out of the drive see how that helps the power.

I have tried with another power supply. Just one HDD and one CD and one disk drive, and as I said, I have tried without the CD and diskdirve, nothing helped.

did u try shotgun debugging ? (starting with bare minimum, so no sound, only basic video, one memory stick, one HD), and then changing em if it still happens, if it continues I think yer mobo is dead (dying) or yer PSU.
