Computer will not turn on

biostud

Lifer
Yesterday I installed the latest win7 patches, and shut down my computer.

Today it will not turn on. The power LED is turned on, on my motherboard, but nothing happens when I push the power button on the computer. No fans, nothing....

Where do I start?

see sig for computer specs.

Update:
I've found out that if I clear CMOS it will turn on for a few secs. but it appears that the CPU fan is not spinning. So is this a preventive strike from my motherbaord not allowing the computer to turn on if no CPU fan is spinning?

I would not think that the updates would be the cause. I downloaded the newest Win 7 ones yesterday on my P55 system, installed and rebooted with no problems.

I also have a Gigabyte H55 MB. Your bios is similar to mine. Under PC health Status there is no setting that will shut the system down if the CPU fan fails or the CPU exceeds a set temp, it will only emit a warning sound. These settings are disabled by default.

Can you boot to your bios? If yes, try setting it to Load Fail-Safe Defaults.

I'd first check that all your power cables are connected and tight, and re-install your ram chips.

If it still doesn't start then you know the drill. First check if your PSU is still working and putting out the correct voltages. Google it and you will get many hits on how to do this. If your PSU is ok, try starting with just the minimum components connected to boot up.

If it still doesn't start get back to us for more suggestions.

If I clear my cmos I have 3-4 secs before it shuts down, so I have no way to get into my bios. When clearing my CMOS I should get fail-safe defaults.

I've ordered a new fan, since I'm going to need one anyways. Hopefully it will do the trick.

That was an easy fix. A CPU fan failure shutdown feature must be built into the MB. I could not find it in the bios. Good to remember.
