About 2 weeks ago, the front panel of my case (USB Ports and headphone jacks) stopped working. I didn't pay much attention to it because I rarely used them anyway.

Last evening, I left my PC on, this morning when I woke up, it was off and would not turn on. I opened up my case, unplugged the PSU, replugged it in, and attempted to turn the PC on, and still nothing. Nothing at all spins or attempts to boot up when turning on the PC. In the past if there was an issue, it would at least try to spin up and then fail.

Since the PC doesn't seem to be attempting to turn on, I'd have to assume it's either the PSU, Case, or Mobo. What is the process for troubleshooting this? I unfortunately do not have a motherboard speaker, so at the moment I cannot listen for beeps.

Power surge got your PS and MB.

The PC is plugged into a surge protector, and none of my other devices attached to that surge protector are having any issues.

If I get a new power supply and it still won't even spin, do I assume that my motherboard fried? Could it potentially be my case since the front panel stopped working first?

try swapping a PS and check back.

Thanks. I'll pick one up and try it out. If with the new PS it still won't turn on or even spin up, do I assume my motherboard fried?

Is it possible that the front panel of the case failing shorted out the mobo?

Unplug the front panel from the motherboard. It could have a short in it. If it still doesn't come on, even with the new power supply, you might be looking at a damaged motherboard.

BTW, surge protectors are a great help, but they aren't perfect, and many won't protect against a surge through your internet connection.

I'm going to grab one at Best Buy after work, and cross my fingers.

Thanks for your help. I'll come back to the forums after testing the new PSU. Hopefully, whatever happened was limited to the PSU.

So, I grabbed a new PSU (Corsair Modular) and hooked it up. With nothing plugged into the PC it turned on, and everything worked. So I hooked everything back up including the front panel ports to the motherboard. It wouldn't turn on again.

So, unhuooked the front panel ports again and it turned on. It appears that the area that controls the front panels on my motherboard has shorted out. Actually, it appears to have burnt/corroded.

Can I continue to use this motherboard as long as I don't use the front panel connectors? Or am I running risk of frying my system?

Had a feeling that was it. Board should be fine. Your old power supply could be fine as well.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it. I may see if I can get 20 for my old PSU. I would rehook it up, but with all the wire management and the new PSU being modular, I'll just stick with it.

Cool. I had one modular and it was great for cable management. Enjoy!
