Computer will not shut down

I have never had this issue before...When I try to shut my computer down it reboots. I hold the power button down for 5 seconds...it reboots. I turn the power switch off in the back it will shut down...turn it back on...and at some point later it will power up again. I did find two virus's on the old comp but nothing else seemed to be malfunctioning. I did a system restore...and quaranteened the virus's no change. Now this may just be coincidence with the virus...and possibly be a bad power supply...what do you guys think??

We need more details, what OS are you running what motherboard? Is it a PC you've built yourself or a brand named PC? What software have you installed recently ie just before it started happening, there are 101 things which can cause this we need more info to help narrow it down sorry...

One thing a lot of PC's if you hold down the power button for 5 seconds it will reboot you need to hold it down for about 10 seconds at least, even if it appears to have switched off, this is especially true if it is a brand name PC.

You should also check your power management configuration in Windows (if you're running windows) and in the bios to see what the default action is when the power button is pressed.

If you post your system specs etc then we might be able to give you some more help

I have an Abit NF7 2.0
Corsair XMS 3200 @200
XP 1700@2.4gig
9700AIWpro @390/333
80 Maxtor ultra
XP home
520 Watt Sunflower p/s

I have installed no new software and the longer I hold the power button...same result...it had worked before. I have been running this setup for over 2 months without a hitch...it is certainly something new.

When I turned off the power supply the turned it back on it stayed off...when I got up this morning the board and fans had power but did not boot up. When I hit the power switch it did actually boot up...whew. I have built numerous computers and have never seen anything like it. I have not installed anything new seeings how I primarily play Counter-strike.

Help

sounds like it could be one of 2 things, the first is to check the power supply if you can get hold of another one, though I think it's more likely to be the mobo.

Check the power management settings in the BIOS turn them off completely if you can especially any wake on lan or wake on modem settings etc, it could possibly be a short somewhere on the board that makes the PC think you are trying to wake it up. Then the usual remove every component except the ram, video and processor and then see if the same thing happens again if it doesn't then start adding things back in one by one (if components such as audio and NIC are on board then disable them)

One other thing that springs to mind that you will kick yourself if it is, does your keyboard have a "power" switch, if so try it with another keyboard, just remembered this happened to me once my machine kept switching off and I had no idea why until I broke a key on my keyboard in frustration and ending up replacing it, then the problem miraculously went away, it was a day or so before I realised what it was.

Hope this helps

OK...now it is doing something a tad different. When I turn it off with the switch in the back...let the fans coast down...and turn it back on...power will come back to most stuff but wont boot up till I press the button in front...it also seems like they are at a reduced voltage till I press the power on button. This is too strange

Check in your BIOS you might have a section for dealing with what happens after a power cut, I believe some motherboards allow the machine to go into standby after a power cut, just check to make sure yours isn't set to do that.

You might want to consider updating your mobo's bios as well, I'm sure I don't have to warn you to be very careful while doing this...

I did check in the bios as well but I didn't look for nor did I see anything about a power disruption...I will go check again. All my wake on stuff is disabled...and verified so. I disconnected my keyboard on shutdown....Looking like I may have to throw this enermax 465 in there and see what is cooking...and I have to replace a bunch of siding today too...crap!

I think you are right...I was going to try and live with it, but as luck would have it I replaced my siding today...pieces here and there...hail damage...more luck...and turned on the power supply only to watch the lights flicker then never come up to speed. I pressed the power button and they sped up, but it didn't post...suckage.
