Computer will not boot with AHCI set in bios

Ok I have a real problem now...

Just done a clean install of windows onto an OCZ vertex 2 60gb. Before the install i set the sata configuration to AHCI in the bios.

If I have my other sata hard drives connected the computer will not boot when the bios is set to AHCI. When I disconnect them it boots fine.

It gets as far as the windows 7 loading bar and then the screen just goes black.

I've installed:

Intel chipset drivers
GPU drivers
Sounds card drivers
and a few progs like MS office, vlc, winamp, etc.

My motherboard is an asus rampage formula.

This wasn't happening earlier but i can't think of anything that i've done that could cause this to happen..

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jez

I plugged in each of my hard drives one at a time and it booted fine in AHCI until I plugged in the new 2TB drive (that came today).

Then it said:

"Checking file system on H:
The type of the file system is NTFS
Volume label is new volume.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.
To skip disk checking, press any key with 10 seconds."

It froze on 1 second. The second time it said it again then booted up fine.

RMA this drive!? The same sata port has been in use for ages.

look up the specifications of the drives in your system and see if any of them benefit from AHCI. If the new drive does but the older ones don't, then you've got a bigger problem than just the drive. If all the drives have AHCI features and the 2TB drive is being pissy, it's possible the drive controller is no good.

Something strange there. Did you already partition your new drive, and put data on it? If not, why would it need the files checked? Do you have a way to connect that drive with USB and take a look at it? Perhaps boot to your Windows install disk, and see what's up with the drive from there. You could verify the problem is disk related, and not another component by moving some wires around.

hmmm i've looked up the manuals for all 3 sata hard drives and can't find ahci listed anywhere...maybe i am looking in the wrong place.

drives are : samsung hd642jj, samsung hd103uj and samsung hd204ui (problem drive)

i did a quick format on the drive when i had booted from the ssd, and then had problems so i plugged in my old sata drive to transfer files across to it. i don't have an external drive case unfortunately. i'll boot to the windows cd and see what it says.

thanks

Hard drives are becoming more complicated with motherboard support and compatibility. My SSD and SATA drives required special chipset drivers from MSI when using certain ports on the motherboard. Screwy stuff.

Problem sorted 😀

I took everything off the drive, reformatted it and put it back on and the problem has gone lol.

So it's all working and I've got to say this hard drive has sped up my computer to another level.

Glad to hear everything's OK!

It's better than ok. I can't believe how fast my computer is now. It's how I imagined it would be in 10 years time 😀

Photoshop opens in less than 3 seconds!

I don't know how other SSDs perform but this is unbelievable.

You're referring to the 2TB HDD, correct?

I've had a similar issue in the past when I was trying to migrate to AHCI for hot-swap capabilities.
