Hi all,

5 year old computer.

K6-500
Ga-5aa
20 gig Seagate ata 66 (6 months old)
192 megs of ram (pc100)

Just tried turning in on for the first time in a month and only the Power Supply and the CPU fan go on. Nothing.

It had been working fine forever.

I did some upgrading 6 months ago:

Seagate 20gb hard drive
Creative labs sound card
VOODOO 3 2000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
New 300 watt power supply

Any help with troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated.

Leigh

(Dont panic, total upgrade cost was $45.00)

Voodoo3 OMFG u roXX0rZ!!!1!

Sorry...

Disconnect the IDE and power cables from your CD, HD, and floppy drives, and try to boot the system. Do you see anything on the screen? Does it POST? If you reconnect the HDD power, does the HDD spin? What if you swap it for a different HD? Pluggin in the CD drive, can you open the tray when it powers up?

If the system sat for 6 months and was plugged into the wall or into a power strip the entire time (anything but a UPS) then it is probable that the PSU has been damaged -- perhaps by lightning.

You can also try things like swapping the memory around or putting the components in a known working machine, but the symptoms you're telling me definately suggest a bad PSU. It's extremely unlikely that a HD motor would fail due to 6 months of disuse, you know?
