Computer will not boot to hard drive during Windows XP installation

Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to read my problem. This thread is a result of unsuccessfully troubleshooting a friend's new computer from 300 miles away...

So here is the issue as I understand it. He put the computer together himself just a day or two ago and began installing Windows XP. The first few steps go fine, he's able to boot to the CD, delete the old partition, create the new partition, format partition and copy the Windows install files to the hard drive. Then the computer automatically reboots.

The problem is on this reboot. The computer simply will not then boot to the hard drive after the Windows XP install files have been copied to it. Apparently, the computer POSTs just fine, he can get into the BIOS normally, but then where Windows would start it's setup routine from the install files that are now on the hard drive, there is nothing but a black screen.

Specs:
CPU: AMD 64 3000+
Mobo: Asrock 939Dual-SATA2
Case: Antec Sonata II
RAM: 2x512 (unsure of brand)
DVDRW: BenQ DW1640
Video: GeForce4 4200 (AGP)
Sound: Unsure
Hard Drive: PATA, but unsure of brand/size

Do these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? I'm starting to run out of ideas so I really appreciate any help you could provide. If you need more information, I'll try to get it ASAP.

Thanks,

Matthew

on reboot, can you go into the bios and see if the hd is being recognized.

you can also format the hd using /s switch with a 98 floppy and then copy the files over to make sure it has a system on it and see if it boots

Thanks for your help mzkhadir, apparently it was an IDE cable issue that he managed to fix. Everything installs properly now. Thanks again.
