Computer whines when monitor turned on...

My computer emits a high pitched whine when the monitor is turned on - I don't understand why this would be the "common" whine of my WD Raptor (36gb) because it turns off as soon as I turn off the monitor. I also don't know why my Radeon would be whining - it only has a little fan and heatsink.

This is annoying as all hell - the computer is cool enough, the HD has a cooler that it is sitting in, I have a house fan blowing into the case (kinda warm during summer).

Anyone have any ideas before I go and send that Raptor back?

Some monitors, specially old and cheap ones can have an insanely annoying high pitched sound, try tapping (banging) on the side of the monitor.

yeah its the monitor not the computer. the cheap-o monitor on my old computer does the same thing.

Try 1 different outlet to plug the Monitor in

It must be the monitor then - it is really old and crappy. I've been eyeing the new Samsung 19" CRTs too 🙂
