Computer wants to roll over and die

A few days ago it wouldn't get past the load screen so I took the cmos battery out put it back in and everything worked fine. I went to a concert yesterday when i got back that night the computer was off (i think the power went off) I turned it on and it would try to load from a cd then would tell me it couldn't load and to put in a system disk. Well my floppy quit working a couple weeks ago and I didn't have my xp cd, so I started messing with some cords in comp unplugged a couple plugged them back in then my computer started working fine. It's been running slow lately but I think that's just because I was used to my old computer with 1500mbs of ram (this one has 512). Almost everything on my computer is no more then 4 months so hopfully nothing is breaking down. Could this be caused by it not shutting down properly? Is there like a system stability test I can run to maybe figure this out. Let me know if you need any other information
