ok i just bought a new antec sonata II case to keep my pc quiet because i thought it was loud because my old case just sucked. My brother just bought this case for his computer and i cant tell its on at all. so i put all my parts into this case, and its still very loud. there is a small fan on my motherboard that is DIRECTLY behind my video card. this is what was making the weird noise during the boot up, so i unplugged it, but my computer started to overheat. so i had to plug that back in. the loud noise isnt coming from the PSU or case fans because my brothers doesnt make this noise, so its either the heatsink or video card fan. could i have damaged hardware or something? or is there a way to keep them quiet? thanks for the help in advance. :)

it sounds like your northbridge fan is beginning to fail. you can buy aftermarket heatsinks that don't require a fan for cooling.

which video card do you have? most midrange to highend cards tend to have loud fans. there are also aftermarket video card heatsink/fan which will be much quieter.

I have a Sonata II. I'm not sure we have the same problem, but my case resonates loudly every 2-3 seconds. I narrowed it down to the Hard Drives, apparently they are resonating the entire case. Pretty funny and sad actually.

i find that my sonata resonates the least when i arrange the hard drives from bottom to top.

hmm well i cleaned out all the dust before i put the parts in, then cleaned them again like 2 days ago so its not the dust. i dont think its my video card has a loud fan because my brother has the same card, but his isnt loud, unless mine is malfunctioning or something. its an x800GTO2. before i re-assembled my computer i always used to get this blue screen with white font saying my hardware was malfunctioning and shut down my pc to prevent damage. i figured this was my hard drive. seagate barracuda 250gb. could this noise be coming from my hard drive? ive had it only for a few months and i have the 5 year warranty, so i can replace it. sorry this sounds stupid, but what is resonating? :S and whats a northbridge fan? haha sorry

What sort of noise is it? If its' a regular constant noise source then it's probably fan based or resonance. If it's intermittent then you're looking at either wires in the fans or the hard drive doing somthing silly. The more recent baracudas do not have a good name for noise levels.

First thing is first, when the computer is on stop the fans using a pencil one at a time, if the noise goes away when you stop the fan then that's the source, buy a replacement. If it's not that then you've got more work to do.

To reduce/eliminate HD resonance is remarkably easy (if you have a drive cage), remove the cage from it's mount and then sit it on a pile of socks on the bottom of your case, 75% of the vibration is gone. For a better result suspending either the drive cage or the drives individually in the 5.25" bays (or elsewhere) is pretty much the best way to reduce noise (a little direct airflow is almost always required for suspended drives though).

I have the same board as you, and I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. Not that the chipset fan was ever really quiet, but after about 3 months it just got nightmarishly loud. I replaced it with a passive northbridge cooler (modded to clear some capacitors on the video card). I think it was a Coolermaster something, but the ones I'd recommend that you get would be the Zalman NB47J or the Evercool VC-RE (if you don't want to mod the Zalman for it to clear the video card).

ok well it was my NB chipset fan. do i really need to leave this plugged in as long as my computer doesnt overheat? or what would be a good cheap and quiet replacement? Zalman NB47J or the Evercool VC-RE? as of right now the fan is directly behind my GPU, can it be moved?
thanks

the other noise was because my case fans were set to high speed instead of low. the case has a control to adjust the speed
