computer very laggy when high utilization of onboard NIC

intrigue

Junior Member
Hi,

I use the Intel onboard LAN with the Asus P4B533-V and whenever I have high network utilization the computer becomes very laggy. I was just wondering why this is and does the onboard NIC on the motherboard use the processor? If so, would putting in a separate PCI network card solve this problem?

Thanks

I had a problem where when I tried to play online games, the games would freeze about 20 seconds in. I got a real nic instead of the built in and it went away. So, yes, that could be it.

motherboard chipset embedded nic is same as chipset embedded sound, chipset embedded modem, software modem, software sound card,
costs cpu power.

The cpu util. of those integrated devices is usually lower than that of a PCI card in most cases. The nic should not be dragging the system down, and I suspect something else as the main issue.

Have you tried different drivers?
How about a clean o/s installation?

I agree, especially about the drivers part. My Epox mobo has an onboard NIC and it came with the driver on a CD Rom. But if you go out to Epoxs' site, they have an updated driver with notes like "fixes this/that/the other problem" "use this driver!" and things like that. Try getting an updated driver. If not, a wipe and reload is in order. My onboard NIC is as transparent as the PCI NIC I used to use...no probs at all.
