Ok right now I have total of 5 computers. To make long start short I am triing to start up web hosting business and I am look for machine that can ran two vmware machines (windows 2003 backup server and fedora 10 backup server). Right now I ran total of 4 machines that have to be on at all times. one those machines is my media center machine(current spec are amd 3800, ddr 400 2 gb ram, 2 ati 650 turners,3 tb hd space with 6 hd,msi nforce 3 motherboard, gpu is ati 2600hd , 500 watt power supply) on average this machine records 100 hrs every two weeks of programming. This machine is connected to tv and then 5.1 amp. Then over course it runs vista ultimate with rdp mod so I can admin the machine from rdp with out killing the tv. This machine is also the main file server, printer/scanner station. Current issue I have the machine is when I pull record media off the boot drive that machine grinds to halt when recording other shows.(actual take 30 minutes for this to happen on GB Ethernet). What i would like to be able to do is combine vmware backup servers with the media center machine.
So the task is to build a computer that can handle the above duites with 2 vmware images(as backup servers). Which way do I go Intel or amd? I am leaning to go with a intel 6600 quad core.My gaming rans a intel 6600e overclocked to 3402. I am hoping to ran the 6600q at 3 ghz. Do you agree with my thoughts? As for the change over I do have extra nvidia 8600 and ati x1950 sitting around that plan I using for the the gpu. As for the issue with pulling the data recording off I plan on going to two 250 GB sata drive is raid 0 I believe that will fix that issue. So the motherboard would have to support 6 sata. The other issue is power use as little as possible this machine has to be on 24 x7

I really do not see why you would want to OC your vm machines, it would be a wise decision to have your quad run @ stock for 24/7 ops (longevity and all that yadayada), especially when you want to take your power usage into consideration. As far as building your new vmmachine, AMD or Intel, it now comes down to how big your budget is. Either way you cannot go wrong.

goodluck.
