I built my current computer in 2003 and I'm looking to update it. My current computer is:

P4 2.4
Asus P4P800 Deluxe
Radeon x1650 512mb vid card. Third or fourth update.
2 G of memory
XP home operating system
dual hard drives (IDE connections)
CD burner, DVD burner (IDE connections)
Case has new 580w power supply. Original became unstable.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

-Normal usage. No 3D gaming. I do some photo editing.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

-I would like to spend less than $600

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

-USA I buy most of my parts from Newegg.

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.

-I like Intel cpu's, ATI video cards, Western Digital

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

-I will reuse the following parts:

-Case and power supply. Good case air flow with three 80 mm fans.
I thought about a new case with 120 mm fans to reduce the noise a little, but I have installed low noise 80's.

-CD burner and DVD burner. Plan to use with IDE connection on same cable as they are currently. Will replace with SATA units when these fail.

-XP Home operating system. I have several programs that need XP and I see no need to change.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

-I have read many of the threads and picked many of the parts based that info. Thank all of you who take the time to help people like me!

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

-No overclocking

8. WHEN do you plan to build it?

-In the next three/four weeks.

The new parts I've picked:

CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400. Is there any reason to go beyond this?

Mother board - ASUS P5Q SE/R Seems to have all of the things I need and I've been happy with my current board.

Memory - OCZ Platinum DDR2 1066 - 4G (2x2G) I'm not sure if XP home will recognize the full 4G. Is it better to go with 2G until I update the operating system in the future?

Video card - Radeon 4670 512mb This seems to be sufficient for my usage and Tom's had a fair recommendation.

Hard drive - Western Digital Caviar SE 320GB Replaces the two PATA drives that I currently have.

Thank you for any recommendation that you have.

My upgrade has been delayed for a couple of weeks do to my schedule. I'm now considering going with a complete new build for a quieter machine and so I will have a working machine during the build.
The list of parts I have picked is:
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400. Is there any reason to go beyond this?
Mother board - ASUS P5Q SE Plus (was going to use the ASUS P5Q SE/R, but it's not available on Newegg now.
Memory - G. Skill DDR2 1066 - 4G (2x2G)
Video card - Sapphire Radeon 4670 512mb Is this sufficient for how I'm using the computer.
Hard drive - Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB (SATA) Replaces the two PATA drives that I currently have.
Case and power supply - Cool Master Sileo 500 RC-500-KKR3-GP Has 500w power supply.
CD/DVD ROM - Sony SATA 18xDVD-ROM, 48xCD-ROM (DDU1681S-OB) Replaces the IDE one I have now.
CD/DVD Burner - Sony Optiarc (SATA) (AD-7240S-OB) Replaces the IDE one I have now.

One of the biggest questions I have is the operating system. I have XP Home, as noted above. Is this the time to go from the 32 bit to the 64 bit? If I go to the 64 bit, do I buy the XP or Vista. Newegg has the Vista Home Premium (32 bit or 64 bit) for $109 with a coupon for an upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out. I just don't know how a new operating system will affect my programs, but I'm sure that I will have to upgrade those at some time in the future anyway.

I would appreciate any advice you can give me on the hardware and especially on the OS.

Go with Vista if you really have to buy an OS. I'd honestly would just run Windows 7 RC (64-bit) until it comes out. If for some reason you really want to run WinXP, either 32bit or 64bit will run fine.

I do need a new buy on the OS. My current OS is an OEM version and as I understand, locked into my current hardware. My understanding is that if I use Windows 7 RC until it is released, I would still have to buy a copy. It sounds like the thing to do is buy the Vista Home Premium (64 bit) and get the coupon for the Windows 7. I hope that the upgrade to Windows 7 does not involve a clean install. I hate reloading all of the programs.

Thank you for the help.
