Computer Turns On By Itself

Just like the title says, the computer turns on by itself. It's unbelievable, any idea on why a computer would do that??

Athlon XP 2200
1 gig Mushkin Ram
GeForce Ti4600
SB Audigy 2 ZS
80GB WD HD
3x 200GB Seagate HD
NEC DVD-RW
Lite-ON CD-RW

Thanks guys

it turns on just randomly throughout the day or when you plug it in.... if it's when you plug it in I've seen that before.... it might be because of a BIOS setting or because your "power SW" plug is backwards or in the wrong place.

If it turns on randomly throughout the day.... POLTERGEIST AHHHHH!

The computer just seems to lock up whenever I do anything... I have to hold down the power to turn it off. I leave it off to let it cool a little bit and then do the stupid thing turns on again.

If you were a computer, would you want to be off? 😛

Usually in the BIOS there are a lot of auto power on options. WOL, time of day, keyboard/mouse, ect...

BTW, you didn't list the most important component that plays a role in this. The MB.

Sorry about that

MOBO - Gigabyte GA7VRXP

The computer turning off happens more when I turn on a game, such sa WoW...

I thought it was a heat problem but that doesn't seem to be the case, ran the MBM5 and what not. The video card did lose one of the heat syncs... but I didn't think that would cause a problem....

off and on, on and off. You gotta love made in china

also check to see if power on after power failure is not turned on.

basically means as soon as you plug PC in or flip power switch, it turns on

with that being off, you gotta hit the power button.

Can't seem to find that in the BIOS...

what? it lost one of its heatsinks? this very well may be the cause for half of your problem.. when windows loses contact with a piece of hardware, it freezes. If your graphics car overheats and stops working, windows freezes. this might also explain the poweroff.

also, are the shutdowns just sudden poweroffs, or are they through windows?

Sounds like multiple issues. You also didn't mention another very important part that seems to get neglected too much..your power supply..the locking up/shutting off could be power supply related, but also sounds like you could have heat issues. I also suggest running memtest. Are you using anything to monitor your temps while in windows?

Hrm... I don't want to dish out money for a video card. Damn it.

Do you have another power supply/vid card you can swap out, one at a time, to see if they are the problem? have another computer that you can put the vid card/power supply into?

do so.

I tried the PSU, still gives me the same problem. I don't have a spare video card lying around tho

Try buying the cheapest vid card you can from somewhere like bestbuy, then if it turns out its not the problem, return it.

Or if you have a good friend w/ a pc...

Thanks guys for all your posts, but I just decided its been 4 years now w/ this comp. Time to move on. Just finished buying parts at Newegg.

Just bought a board and chip so far. Wait for the paycheck to buy the rest of the stuff.

I have it in my BIOS, it's probably in there somewhere, maybe under a different name...
