Computer turn itself off after few seconds....

Hi, I have an AMD XP 1700 that uses an ECS mobo and that mobo doesn't work any more. So I switched my CPU to Biostar Pro. I assemble everything together and after bootup, one of the block to tighten the hs broke off so the hs fell off. After that, I re-attached the hs and from there on it automatically shut itself off after a few seconds but the power button is still on.

This could be one of several things:

* Wrong FSB speed.

* HS isn't making proper contact with the CPU, or you don't have the thermal paste installed properly (if at all), which is causing the CPU to overheat and shutdown.

* CPU is dead (maybe the ECS mobo isn't?)

No, I don't believe the CPU is dead because I tested with another CPU which is my AMD 2500+ that I stated above. I also re-applied the thermal paste and I believe I installed it properly. The weird thing is that after it shuts off, I think the power of the computer sitll not but nothing is running.

No, I don't think it's overheating because

1. I could get to the blue setting screen before the hs fell off.

2. After it fell off; I re-applied the thermal paste with AS5, it boot up for couple of seconds but nothing is on the screen and it shuts off after that.

Remove the CPU and clean up all the AS5 (you may have gotten some AS5 on the traces causing a short). Reapply the HS and AS5, making sure that it is positioned correctly.

Yes, that's what I did when I changed the CPU to 2500+

Edit: The computer doesn't turn itself now anymore but I just don't see anything on the monitor. What can I do now?

It sounds like your 1700+ is dead from the overheating that occurred almost instantly when the heatsink came off. The symptoms (running fans & drives but no display) fit that diagnosis, and the fact that your 2500+ does work where the 1700+ does not work supports that theory. I would slap a 1.8GHz Duron in there and call it a day, if your mobo supports the 1.8GHz Duron.

Then I would get a 1.8GHz Duron and a Shuttle AN35N Ultra 😀 First, look at the third and fourth heatsink photos on this page, though. Is that right on yours?

I applied the hs properly, it's flat down to the cpu. I just tried to turn it on and the green light on the monitor is on but nothing on the monitor nor the keyboard.

Yes, I have that connector but I don't think my motherboard has a port for that. And I have never used that in the past. Where do I plug it into if I don't have that port in my motherboard?

Edit: I am going to go to Fry's today and purchase a new motherboard to see if it will work. I'll get back with you. TIA

Alright, I bought the mobo today and it works fine with both CPU so I guess the conclusion is that my other mobo is messed up when the HS dropped. Thank you for all of you guys replied, I appreciated so much.
